Ankapark, which has remained on Ankara’s agenda for years, has reopened its doors to visitors. Following work carried out by Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, the site is now available to the public as a free green and recreational area. According to the municipality, more than 80,000 people participated in a public survey, with over 90% supporting the use of the site as a green and recreational space.
Today, Ankapark offers walking and relaxation areas, green spaces, several refreshment points and a free sightseeing train. With its reopening, the site is once again being considered not only through its former identity as a theme park, but also as an urban space where people can spend time, relax and enjoy outdoor recreation.
However, the park’s most anticipated attractions, including the amusement park and 41 attractions units, have not yet reopened. As a result, Ankapark currently represents less a fully operational theme park and more a large public space that is being given a new purpose through different forms of use.
This is where the significance of Ankapark’s new chapter becomes particularly clear: an area originally developed as a large scale attractions investment is now taking on a different identity in response to Ankara’s needs for recreation, outdoor activities and public life. The future of its attractions facilities and how the site will evolve will ultimately shape Ankapark’s new role within the city.
